Shibboleth Service Provider Security Advisory

A Shibboleth Service Provider Security Advisory was issued today. Updated versions of the Shibboleth 1.3 and 1.2.1 Service Provider software are available which correct a security issue. The full text of the Advisory is available here.

ProtectNetwork

The SDSS Federation now includes ProtectNetwork, an open identity provider service that enables users to self-register, and then provides them with a free digital identity.
TypeKey

The SDSS Federation now includes an identity provider that allows TypeKey identities to be accessed within the federation. TypeKey is an open access, free identity service developed by Six Apart, Inc. The SDSS TypeKey Bridge is available as an option in the SDSS Federation WAYF, and allows TypeKey identities to be translated into SAML attributes for consumption by SDSS Federation service providers. This facility may find use in initial testing of new service providers, or for establishing identity at collaborative resources such as wikis.

Metaleth Project

Metaleth, an early adopter project based at the University of Bristol, has joined the SDSS Federation as an Identity Provider. The project is implementing a Shibboleth environment, and integrating it with the Ex Libris Group's library portal product Metalib as a Shibboleth Service Provider.
New document: Policy proposals for the UK Access Management Federation

A new document has been added to the SDSS document register: it contains proposals covering technical, policy and organisational issues which have been developed within the SDSS project and are recommended for the UK Access Management Federation.
ScienceDirect now available via SDSS

Elsevier has become the first commercial publisher to make one of its services available to UK academic users via the SDSS federation. ScienceDirect, "the world's largest electronic collection of science, technology and medicine full text and bibliographic information", with more than 7 million full-text articles, is now available via SDSS. Member institutions of SDSS that already subscribe to ScienceDirect and want to enable Shibboleth access should contact the SDSS team in the first instance.
Statistical Accounts of Scotland

The two Statistical Accounts of Scotland, covering the 1790s and the 1830s, are among the best contemporary reports of life during the agricultural and industrial revolutions in Europe. The accounts provide a rich record of a wide variety of topics, including: wealth, class and poverty; climate, agriculture, fishing and wildlife; population, schools, and the moral health of the people. Subscribing institutions that are members of the SDSS federation can now access this resouce via Shibboleth.
EDINA CAB Abstracts

CAB Abstracts is a bibliographic database compiled by CAB International. It covers the significant research and development literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, aspects of human health, human nutrition, animal health and the management and conservation of natural resources. Access to this EDINA-hosted service is now available via Shibboleth to subscribing institutions that are members of the SDSS federation.

MIMAS Hairdressing Training, an on-line training system for the hairdressing industry, provides photographic step by step guides combined with lessons and handy tips and techniques, suiting a variety of learning styles. The service is now available via Shibboleth.

SDSS WAYF upgrade

The SDSS federation's central WAYF server has been upgraded with fresh graphic design and enhanced functionality from the latest Internet2 reference code. That code includes substantial changes contributed by Rod Widdowson from the SDSS team, bringing its internal structure into line with the latest identity provider code and adding new functionality. Following any of the EDINA links above with no existing Shibboleth session established (close your browser if necessary) and pushing the "Login using Shibboleth" button should take you to the new-look WAYF.
